FOCS focuser pinout was created by wsuyker
Hi,
My recently purchased Avalon FOCS motorfocuser for C11 works well with my Avalon Uno mount. However, in situations where I use the C11 scope on another mount, I would like to connect the FOCS to my Pegasus Ultimate Powerbox v2 (see here ). This smart box has a dedicated stepper motor port for uni- or bipolar 12V stepper motors. The pimout of this box is shown in the attachment. Is it possible to drive the Avalon focus motor via this port and what would be the connecting cable pinout?

Thanks, Willem

Hi Willem

It should be possible to drive the Avalon Instruments C11 Focs motor via Pegasus Ultimate Powerbox v2 by using a custom cable with a 4 Pin connector from a side and an 8 pin connector to the other side.

So you’ll need a 4 pin cable, a 4 pin connector and an 8 pin connector to make your custom cable.

Below the cable connectors scheme

The aux1 StarGo port shown in the picture below is the same of the C11 Focs Focuser.

Feel free to ask for any further information

Thank you, Stefano!
The straightforward pinout indicated above works! However, the motor is much more noisy, generating more vibrations than when used with the M-Uno mount. Can this be optimized somehow? I use the standard "advanced" StarGo parameters. Or could it be that there is an even more efficient wiring/ pinout connection? Or is this the result of the Pegasus box parameters and not correctable?
Thank you, Willem

Hi Willem,
The Pegasus box has had issues controlling other brand motors as well. You might want to read this thread on CN if you haven’t already:

Unfortunately, not yet resolved, but you could contact Pegasus director or post on that thread.

Hi Stefano,
I contacted Evans at Pegasus Astro to try to solve the problems (the FOCS draws 2-3 A current and makes a loud, grinding noise when controlled with the Pegasus UPBv2; it does work correctly, however).
Evans asked for technical details of the stepper motor (is it 12V? What are the specs?). Could you provide some of this information, so we can work to sort this out?

Best regards, Willem

Hi Willem
For our FOCS C11 we use Step Motor 42SHDC3025-24b. You'll find the specs highlighted on the image below
