Avalon linear seized clutches? was created by strutsinaction
Hi

My Avalon Linear Fast Reverse mount (2014 Synscan model) has not been used for over 12 months. I stored the mount inside my house with both RA and DEC clutches applied (no telescope or counterweight bar attached). Today when I released both clutches the mount appeared to be seized in both axes as though the clutches were still applied (both levers were disengaged and loose). I had to apply some force to get the mount to move in both axes. Eventually, both axes were moving although there still appears to be some resistance during the rotation.

Is this to be expected?
Would you expect the clutches to seize after a period of inactivity?
Will this affect the operation or accuracy of the mount?
Do I need to return the mount for a service?

Thanks for any advice!

Regards
John

Dear John

Is not an expected behavior but after a long time without using the mount this may happen. This doesn’t affect at all operation and accuracy of the mount, because when the clutch is applied the arms and the axis become one only body.

With the clutch loosen try to perform some axis rotation until the movement become smooth.

If rotation doesn’t get enough smooth the lever should be disassembled and the brass dowel disengaged. In case we could provide you a small video tutorial to perform this simple operation.

Best regards.

Hi Stefano

Thank you for the quick response! I'm relieved to hear that this shouldn't affect the operation of the mount.

I think a short video would be helpful to help illustrate your suggestion.

Thanks!

Hi Stefano

I'm pleased to report that the cleaning procedure you suggested has worked well. Both RA and DEC axes are now rotating freely again!

Once again, thanks for your excellent advice (and video tutorial).

John
